I almost vomited when I saw this headline (link no longer available):

Best not to be gay in business

I wondered what it could possibly mean, especially in our esteemed democracy.

It turns out, however, that the headline is misleading. A man who had a relationship with a younger man and used company resources to help him out, then lied about it in court, does not make him a representative of the queer community, nor representative of queer business people in general. I found it offensive and demeaning.

The issue has more to do with lying under oath than being queer — ask ex-president Bill Clinton about that sort of thing. The man abused company resources. That’s what the article should be about. As far as I’m concerned, his being gay is secondary to the article. It’s a supporting fact, and using a misleading headline to grab attention is wrong. And yes, I’d have the same opinion if he was straight.

On the bright side, I went to university with the publisher of the website, so I dropped him an email and asked him to investigate in his official capacity. Hopefully it will result in a more accurate headline.
