Our nuclear power station, Koeberg, is finally getting a spare part to get it going again after it broke in December.
Now, the part needed is a 200-tonne rotor, 20m across, which was too big to be transported by air, so one of our Navy‘s ships went to fetch it.
The rotor had to be welded to the helicopter pad on the ship, because it’s so big.
The rotor, which arrived this week, will then be transported on road by a 12-axle flatbed trailer to the power station, where it will be swapped out for the broken one. Then, and this is my favourite part, the old one will be sent back to France, repaired, and then brought back! This 200-tonne rotor is on loan!
