Someone in government is paying attention (see related link).
With all the drama surrounding the Civil Union Bill vs the existing Marriage Act, people have lost sight of the Constitutional Court ruling that the Marriage Act *is* unconstitutional and *must* be changed.
A lawyer friend of mine has this to say: there will be a Civil Union Act, and there will be a Marriage Act, and same-sex partners (and heterosexual partners too, for that matter) can either have a civil union partnership, or marriage, depending on their wants and needs. In other words, the Civil Union Bill is not trying to sideline homosexual couples at all.
I look forward to 1 December 2006 at any rate. Even if the Civil Union Bill is passed before then, the Marriage Act will default to include same-sex partnership automatically. Then I can get married, and people can stop blowing this out of proportion.
I love you, Marinus.
