Wilfred Cardinal Napier of the Catholic Church is another idiot, using religion in his argument against legalising same-sex marriage (see related link).
When will the church representatives realise that the marriage we want has nothing to do with religion? I don't need to be a member of a church if I want to marry a woman (as the law currently stands) – all I need is a marriage licence, issued by the state. I don't even have to be married in a church!
We're asking for (and have been granted) equality, in a country that already enshrines our rights in the Bill of Rights. The Constitutional Court has already ruled, and the law has to change. It's not a religious issue at all.
Furthermore, all church representatives are bigots, unless they truly follow the word of Jesus Christ (after whom the entire Christian faith is named). This is a man who said "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and "let he who is without sin cast the first stone". He also said, "judge not, lest ye be judged". Three basic statements that govern any morality, and so easily forgotten by the practitioners of organised hypocrisy.
The only thing I don't believe about that Jesus guy is that he rose from the dead. Since that's a basic tenet of the Christian faith, I guess I'm not a Christian.
So, even if the church does represent Christianity as intended by Jesus Christ (which it doesn't), where's the problem? We separated church and state a long time ago (thank goodness). It's a civil issue and the Constitutional Court has already ruled. Everyone should just chill and wait for 1 December 2006, when the words "or spouse" get automatically added to the Marriage Act.
Problem solved.
