Today is an odd day at work. Being the beginning of the month, we have several processes that need to run, but there are gaps in between hectic processing of databases and reports that I have a spare moment.
I had a look at a NAS solution for home, but it's still a little out of my price range. The Planet NAS-3410 (4-slot IDE RAID 5 solution) comes in at a shade under R14 000, but it's what I'm looking for. I just can't afford that for a while yet.
It's a puzzle. Whatever I decide to do will impact us for the next year to 18 months because of the cost and storage implications. We have over a terabyte of data to consider.
It looks like the most cost-effective solution is a cheapish PC (in the order of R5000) with RAID 1 ability. Two large Seagates running in a mirror, off a Celeron with 512MB RAM and a decent NIC should suit our needs.
Then the firewall can be a WAN router with NAT and firewalling rules, which comes in at under R500.
I just don't know.
I see your NAS requirement and remind you about *my* interest in hanging my arse out in the breeze 😉 ..we should talk!
I am going to shelve this for a little while because I'm getting a new car and that takes priority over wishful thinking.
