Health Minister and obliviot Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has decided that she’s too important for an AIDS conference.

South Africa’s controversial health minister has withdrawn from a major Aids conference because organisers did not give her a prominent place in the programme, the deputy president said on Tuesday.

Updated 2018/10/10: I’d forgotten just how damaging she and Thabo Mbeki were to the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa. I found this article today while changing the reference from “silly cow” to “Health Minister”.

“A study on the safety and efficacy of the hypoxis plant (African potato) extract in HIV-positive patients was terminated prematurely, and reported to the Medicines Control Council, because most of the patients who received the extract showed severe bone marrow suppression after eight weeks,” the study found.

After an initial improvement, most patients became rapidly more ill.

Note that this article was published in 2003, while she was still promoting the African potato as a legitimate HIV treatment four years later.
