I am against changing the name of any city where the associated cost is unthinkably high – and the capital city of South Africa, Pretoria, is such an example. The ANC government wants to change the name to Tshwane.

In light of our oppressive past, and the significance of the name "Pretoria" as a symbol of apartheid, I understand why they want to change it, but I also feel that it should remain, if only to help people remember what we as a country have achieved.

Shakespeare said that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and yet, and yet, Pretoria should remain Pretoria. Aside from the obvious cost to change every single atlas, world book, website, street sign, GPS navigation system and other things I can't even imagine to contemplate at this time of night, it shows greater tolerance and acceptance by the ANC government, in the spirit of the great Nelson Mandela, to leave Pretoria alone.
