Today, the petrol price went up again, this time to R7.01 per litre in Gauteng (where half the country's population lives). Knock-on effects include increases in the cost of transporting, well, practically everything. This includes food and clothing – you know – the little things …
This after a 68c per litre increase last month.
In real terms, we pay around double per litre that the US pays, based on the informal Big Mac Index and PPP (I do this in my head, so don't ask, but you can check it). The UK pays around '1.00 per litre, which again, in real terms, is about five dollars.
What this all means is that we're paying twice as much for fuel than America, and it's killing us. A good salary here is around R14 000 per month before tax, which with the exchange rate is $2 000.
'Nuff said.
